Deep Trough Line Causes 40°C Heatwave in Western Odisha and Week-Long Nor'wester Storms in the South

Odisha is currently facing unusual weather patterns as a deep trough line extending across the state and neighboring areas up to 0.9 km above sea level creates a stark contrast in conditions—intense heat in western districts during the day and heavy nor’wester thunderstorms with lightning and hail in the southern and coastal regions by afternoon.

The Regional Meteorological Centre has predicted that daytime temperatures will reach 40°C on March 28 and 29, particularly in Sambalpur, Sundargarh, Jharsuguda, and other western districts of Odisha.

On Friday, six locations recorded temperatures of 39°C or higher, with Titilagarh reaching the peak at 39.5°C. Other areas that exceeded 39°C include Sambalpur, Jharsuguda, Hirakud, Bhawanipatna, and Sonepur.

While western Odisha continues to endure the heat, southern districts experienced significant Kal Baisakhi activity on Friday. Rayagada recorded the heaviest rainfall, accompanied by thunder and lightning, while scattered showers affected parts of Kalahandi, Kandhamal, and Balangir.

RMC Director Manorama Mohanty stated that the trough line and its associated cyclonic circulation will persist, bringing widespread thunderstorms, lightning, and hail across the state for the next week. Coastal areas are expected to remain overcast throughout this period.

  • Alert Details
  • Orange Warning (Saturday): Mayurbhanj district — heavy rain, hail, lightning, and gusty winds of 50-60 km/h.
  • Yellow Warning (Saturday): Balasore, Bhadrak, and Jajpur districts — rain, lightning, and winds of 30-40 km/h.
  • Yellow Warning (Sunday to Thursday): Southern districts (Malkangiri, Koraput, Nabarangpur, Kalahandi, Nuapada) and north-western districts (Mayurbhanj, Keonjhar, Sundargarh, Balangir).

Mohanty further noted that there will be no significant change in daytime temperatures over the next four days. From April 1, temperatures are anticipated to return to near-normal levels of 37-38°C as the weather system begins to weaken.
