Several regions in Odisha have been experiencing light to moderate rainfall due to the influence of a subtropical westerly jet stream over eastern India. The Regional Meteorological Centre has indicated that the state is likely to face thunderstorms, gusty winds, rain, and potential hailstorms over the next five days.
Additionally, isolated rainfall may persist in certain areas for as long as seven days.
Last night, a Kalbaisakhi (nor’wester) storm struck Balasore, delivering heavy rain and thunderstorms for nearly two hours. The continuous lightning and thunder caused panic among local residents.
In the Suelpur area of Balasore town, a coconut tree was set ablaze after being struck by lightning during the storm. A local resident recorded the dramatic incident as the tree ignited following the lightning strike.
The intensity of the lightning was so severe last night that people were hesitant to venture outside their homes. Authorities have advised residents to exercise caution during thunderstorms and to avoid open areas during lightning activity.
