Bhubaneswar: In a significant statewide initiative against narcotics, all cannabis that has been confiscated and stored at police stations throughout Odisha will be destroyed this year, announced Vinaytosh Mishra, the Director General of Police (CID-CB), on Saturday.
During a press conference, Mishra emphasized that this operation is being conducted methodically, following the acquisition of necessary judicial permissions. He pointed out that the buildup of seized narcotics at police facilities has led to storage difficulties and raised security concerns, particularly regarding theft.
“There is a Standard Operating Procedure (SOP) in place for the destruction of seized narcotics. Samples are retained for evidentiary purposes, while the remaining contraband is destroyed after due legal clearance,” he stated.
The DG also revealed that over 100 tonnes of confiscated drugs, with a market value exceeding Rs 500 crore, have already been disposed of in the latest phase of this operation. He mentioned that the department is currently pursuing court approval to destroy an additional 200 tonnes of seized narcotics.
