Tension escalated at BJB Autonomous College in Bhubaneswar, Odisha, late Tuesday night when a farewell celebration devolved into a violent confrontation between students from two hostels, injuring 25 individuals.
The altercation was sparked by a disagreement over loud DJ music during a farewell party held at Ashok hostel. Inmates from Ambedkar hostel alerted the PCR van, which prevented the DJ night from proceeding. Despite this, some students began playing music with their own systems, leading to further disputes around 1:30-2 am that escalated into stone pelting, transforming the area into a battleground for nearly an hour.
Bystanders, including uninvolved students, locked themselves in their rooms in fear as the chaos unfolded. The injured were subsequently taken to Capital Hospital for treatment.
Police arrived to restore order, and security on campus has been increased with a temporary police camp established. College authorities are conducting an internal investigation to determine the events and identify those responsible, with potential disciplinary actions, including rustication, anticipated for those involved.
A student commented that the clash stemmed from prior tensions between the two hostels. Debris, including stones and glass shards from a broken bottle, was found scattered on campus the following morning.
