Brahmapur: A man from Ganjam district, aged 58, was sentenced to life imprisonment by a local court on Monday for the murder of his wife, stemming from a family disagreement that occurred two years prior, according to a government advocate.

Judge Asant Kumar Das of the Ganjam District and Sessions Court also imposed a fine of Rs 10,000 on the convicted individual, Rajendra Jena.

If Jena does not pay the imposed fine, he will serve an additional year of rigorous imprisonment, as stated by public prosecutor Biswajit Baral.

The verdict followed the examination of 13 witnesses, Baral added.

The prosecution’s case revealed that on the night of August 28, 2024, Jena attacked his 56-year-old wife, Jhunu Jena, using a crowbar while she was asleep in their home, which falls under the jurisdiction of the Brahmapur Sadar police station.

Frequent quarrels characterized their relationship, and the day after the incident, Jhunu’s brother filed a complaint at the Sadar police station.

Upon arrival, police discovered the woman deceased in a pool of blood, with the crowbar found next to her.

Following a post-mortem examination, Jena was arrested and has remained in custody since, as his request for bail was denied by the court, noted the public prosecutor.
