India Weather Update: Heavy Rainfall and Hailstorms Expected Nationwide Following Monsoon Onset

The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has predicted extensive rainfall, thunderstorms, lightning, and strong winds in various regions of the country on Friday, with some states also experiencing squally weather and hailstorms.

Following the monsoon’s arrival on Thursday, heavy rainfall was reported across Kerala, prompting the weather agency to issue orange and yellow alerts for multiple districts and the Lakshadweep islands. According to the Regional Meteorological Department in Kerala, heavy to very heavy rainfall is anticipated in isolated areas of the state this week, along with similar conditions expected in Lakshadweep over the next two days. Thunderstorms, lightning, and gusty winds will accompany this weather today.

The IMD has also indicated favorable conditions for the further advancement of the southwest monsoon over parts of the central Arabian Sea, Goa, Maharashtra, Andhra Pradesh, Tamil Nadu, the Bay of Bengal, and Northeast India in the next 2-3 days.

Overall, the weather across India today is expected to include isolated to scattered light to moderate rainfall in Delhi, Punjab, East & West Uttar Pradesh, Chandigarh, Haryana, and East & West Rajasthan, along with thunderstorms, lightning, and gusty winds.

Similar conditions are predicted for Jammu-Kashmir-Ladakh-Gilgit-Baltistan-Muzaffarabad, Himachal Pradesh, and Uttarakhand on Friday, where hailstorm activity and gusty winds reaching speeds of 50-60 km/h are also expected. Uttarakhand may experience isolated heavy rainfall during the day.

Regions including Gangetic and sub-Himalayan West Bengal, Bihar, Jharkhand, Odisha, Sikkim, East and West Madhya Pradesh, Chhattisgarh, and Vidarbha could see light to moderate rainfall, along with gusty winds over the Andaman and Nicobar islands today. These weather conditions may persist until June 10 in some areas.

Heavy rainfall is also forecasted for the Andaman and Nicobar islands, sub-Himalayan West Bengal, and Sikkim until June 10.

A thundersquall with wind speeds of 50-60 km/h is likely to affect West and East Madhya Pradesh and Chhattisgarh today and tomorrow.

In South India, widespread light to moderate rainfall, accompanied by thunderstorms, lightning, and gusty winds (40-50 km/h), is expected over coastal, north and south interior Karnataka, coastal Andhra Pradesh, Yanam, Tamil Nadu, Puducherry, Karaikal, Telangana, Rayalaseema, and Mahe on Friday. Some areas may also experience isolated heavy rainfall today.

In Northeast India, widespread light to moderate rainfall is anticipated over Nagaland, Manipur, Mizoram, and Tripura today, with heavy rainfall expected until June 10.

Arunachal Pradesh, Assam, and Meghalaya will also see isolated heavy rainfall today.

In West India, Konkan, Goa, central Maharashtra, Marathwada, and the Gujarat region, including Saurashtra and Kutch, are forecasted to experience isolated to scattered light to moderate rainfall starting today, with the possibility of heavy rainfall in these areas over the next 2-3 days, as predicted by the IMD.
