Union Home Minister Amit Shah and BJP National President Nitin Nabin, along with the party’s General Secretary (Organisation) BL Santosh, convened a critical meeting on Thursday to finalize a major organizational overhaul of the BJP and to discuss the forthcoming reshuffle in the Union Cabinet, which is anticipated to occur within the next few days.
Shah has canceled his planned trip to Odisha to focus on streamlining the party organization ahead of the reshuffle. He was initially scheduled to arrive in Odisha on July 3 for a two-day visit.
Sources indicate that the ministerial reshuffle is expected to coincide with the announcement of the party’s new organizational team, led by party president Nitin Nabin, which has been long awaited. Nabin also consulted with several Union ministers last week, including Defence Minister Rajnath Singh.
There is a strong likelihood that some Union ministers will be transitioned into organizational roles within the BJP, while party officials may be appointed to government positions.
Discussions between Shah and Nabin reportedly centered on forming the new central team, adjusting national office-bearers, and reallocating regional responsibilities in preparation for the upcoming State Assembly elections.
Party insiders have suggested that the restructuring will involve introducing younger faces and reassigning certain Union ministers to significant State organizational roles. The Government is actively evaluating the Council of Ministers, with structural changes and potential ministerial exits aimed at improving administrative efficiency and enhancing voter engagement.
The terms of three governors—Thawar Chand Gehlot (Karnataka), Mangubhai Patel (Madhya Pradesh), and Lt Gen Gurmit Singh (Uttarakhand)—are set to conclude in the coming months. Sources indicate that some ministers who may be removed from the Union Cabinet could be appointed as Governors.
Prime Minister Narendra Modi is scheduled to visit Indonesia, Australia, and New Zealand from July 6 to 11, making July 5 a highly speculated date for the reshuffle.
Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman, currently traveling abroad, is expected to return on the same day. BJP sources have noted a growing sentiment among the Government’s leadership that key ministries need fresh personnel.
Additionally, more representatives from Uttar Pradesh, Uttarakhand, and Punjab are likely to be included in the ministry, with Assembly elections approaching in these states next year.
Following the BJP’s significant victory in West Bengal, some party MPs from the state may also be included in the Union Council of Ministers. Sources further indicate that representatives from the rebel AAP, TMC, and the Shinde-led Shiv Sena group may also be considered for positions in the Union Council of Ministers.
