The state government has made significant progress in its goal to transform Odisha’s youth into globally competitive professionals by expediting land acquisition for two new World Skill Centers in Berhampur and Sambalpur.
Announced with a substantial budget allocation of ₹278 crore in the 2026-27 state budget, these centers are designed to provide world-class, industry-aligned training that meets international standards.
The Skill Development and Technical Education Department has successfully completed the land identification process and initiated the administrative procedures for the seamless transfer of the identified plots.
For the Berhampur center, a vast 40-acre site in Laudigaon mouza under Kanisi tahasil in Ganjam district has been selected. Following a thorough field assessment by technical experts who evaluated both Laudigaon and Sitalapalli, Laudigaon was chosen as the optimal location. Its extensive contiguous land, strategic proximity to IISER Berhampur, and closeness to the coastline make it ideal for launching high-demand courses such as Marine Engineering and Hospitality.
The department’s Additional Secretary has already instructed the Berhampur District Skill Development and Employment Deputy Director to promptly submit the land alignment proposal to revenue authorities. This will facilitate the swift transfer of the land to the Skill Development and Technical Education Department.
In Sambalpur, nearly 15 acres of government land in Badasinhari mouza has been identified. Currently managed by the Fisheries and Animal Resources Development Department, the plot will be transferred following new directives issued to the Sambalpur District Collector. The local Deputy Director has been empowered to submit the separation proposal without delay.
These prompt actions highlight the state government’s clear commitment to equipping thousands of young Odias with future-ready skills that will open doors to lucrative job opportunities both in India and abroad.
With specialized training infrastructure being established in both coastal Berhampur and central Sambalpur, this initiative is expected to significantly enhance employability and position Odisha as an emerging skill-development hub in eastern India.
