The Supreme Court is poised to review a public interest litigation (PIL) that contests the procedure undertaken by the Odisha government for appointing the next Director General of Police (DGP).

A bench of three judges, including Chief Justice Surya Kant, Justice Joymalya Bagchi, and Justice V. Mohan, will address the issue. The petition, brought forth by Jayant Das from Baleshwar, claims that the State did not adhere to the Supreme Court’s 2006 directives established in the significant Prakash Singh case, which outlines the protocols for DGP appointments.

In previous hearings, the court’s amicus curiae, Raju Ramachandran, raised concerns regarding transparency and presented two reports that questioned the State’s choice to elevate two officers of ADG rank to the DGP level for the selection committee.

This case is anticipated to assess the tension between state authority and compliance with police reforms mandated by the Supreme Court, potentially affecting governance and the leadership of law enforcement in Odisha.
