Once again, the traffic management system in Bhubaneswar, the capital of Odisha, has faltered, resulting in a significant traffic jam that left numerous commuters stranded between Hanspal and Vani Vihar.

The extensive delay brought considerable distress to daily travelers who had to endure the oppressive heat, while emergency services also faced challenges, as an ambulance became ensnared in the congested traffic.

The chaos was primarily caused by a severe bottleneck near Palasuni, where a six-lane road abruptly narrows to just two lanes. This sudden reduction in roadway capacity, coupled with a complete absence of on-site traffic management, transformed a critical highway into a slow-moving parking lot.

Compounding the issue is the unrestricted entry of heavy goods vehicles and trucks into the city center during peak traffic times. Unlike other major cities in India, which impose strict ‘No-Entry’ regulations for heavy vehicles to mitigate congestion, Bhubaneswar currently lacks effective measures to manage such traffic.

This situation has sparked widespread public outrage directed at the local administration. Commuters have raised concerns about the authorities’ failure to implement necessary restrictions on heavy vehicles and proper lane management at crucial bottleneck points. Until effective traffic regulations and structural fixes are introduced, the daily commuters in the capital will continue to suffer.
