Odisha has initiated a fire safety inspection campaign lasting a month, focusing on shopping malls, hospitals, and educational institutions, with unannounced checks scheduled until October 15.

This extensive initiative aims to assess whether significant buildings are equipped to handle fire emergencies, scrutinizing both new and old constructions.

Starting on September 15, the state government has planned inspections throughout October 15. The Odisha Fire & Emergency Services will conduct surprise evaluations to determine if these establishments meet safety standards and identify any potential deficiencies that could hinder emergency responses.

This proactive measure was prompted by a tragic hotel fire in Delhi that claimed 23 lives, leading the state to reevaluate safety preparedness in public and commercial spaces.

Sudhanshu Sarangi, the Fire Service Director General, informed PTI that inspection teams will focus on educational institutions, hospitals, and shopping malls. He noted that while newer buildings typically adhere to safety regulations, older structures often require more scrutiny to ensure their emergency systems are effective.

The initiative aims not only to pinpoint deficiencies but also to enhance compliance among property owners and managers. The review is part of a broader effort to bolster community safety in Odisha, as creating safer environments is deemed crucial for the state’s overall development.

Buildings that do not comply with the required safety measures will face consequences. According to Sarangi, the owner will receive a notice, and the relevant development authority will be alerted about any violations.

With inspections continuing until October 15, the Fire & Emergency Services have a month to evaluate safety protocols and address any shortcomings in significant public and commercial buildings across the state.
