Panchkula, Sept 10: A new wave of heavy rain is predicted to impact Haryana, Punjab, Chandigarh, and Delhi from September 14 to 16. Meanwhile, Odisha is expected to encounter isolated extremely heavy rainfall on Thursday, driven by active weather systems affecting large areas of the country, according to the India Meteorological Department (IMD).
In the All India Weather Summary and Forecast Bulletin released at 9.09 am on Thursday, the IMD indicated that isolated rainfall is anticipated over Haryana, Chandigarh, Delhi, and Punjab between September 10 and 16, with heavy rain expected at isolated locations in these regions during the final three days of the forecast.
The seven-day outlook suggests that rain activity will gradually increase in the area. Isolated rain is likely in Haryana, Chandigarh, and Delhi on September 10-11, with scattered rainfall expected from September 12 to 16. For Punjab, isolated rain is forecasted through September 13, transitioning to scattered rainfall from September 14 to 16.
Specifically, the IMD has issued warnings for heavy rainfall at isolated spots across Haryana, Chandigarh, Delhi, and Punjab on September 14, 15, and 16.
A persistent upper-air cyclonic circulation is located over north Haryana, extending up to 3.1 km above mean sea level. Additionally, a new Western Disturbance has formed as a trough in the middle tropospheric westerlies, with its axis situated at 5.8 km above mean sea level.
The monsoon trough is currently passing through Jammu, Dehradun, Bareilly, Daltonganj, and Digha, eventually reaching the center of a low-pressure area over the North Bay of Bengal and its vicinity.
This low-pressure area emerged over the North Bay of Bengal early Thursday, along with an associated cyclonic circulation extending up to 9.4 km above mean sea level.
The most significant warning for Thursday pertains to Odisha, where the IMD forecasts heavy to very heavy rainfall, along with isolated extremely heavy showers. Isolated heavy rain is also anticipated in Assam and Meghalaya, Bihar, Chhattisgarh, Gangetic West Bengal, Jharkhand, Kerala and Mahe, Nagaland, Manipur, Mizoram and Tripura, Coastal Andhra Pradesh, and Uttarakhand.
Odisha is expected to experience heavy to very heavy rainfall continuing on September 11, with the focus shifting towards Chhattisgarh on September 12, where heavy to very heavy rain is likely at isolated locations.
In the northeast, isolated heavy rainfall is predicted for Arunachal Pradesh from September 11 to 16, and for Assam and Meghalaya from September 10 to 16. Additionally, Nagaland, Manipur, Mizoram, and Tripura are forecasted to see isolated heavy rain from September 10 to 13.
Uttarakhand may experience isolated heavy rainfall from September 10 to 13, with fairly widespread to widespread rain expected from September 11 to 14. Himachal Pradesh is projected to see isolated to scattered rainfall until September 13, becoming fairly widespread from September 14 to 16.
In western India, isolated heavy rainfall is anticipated over Konkan and Goa, Madhya Maharashtra, Saurashtra and Kutch, and the Gujarat Region on September 13-14, and over Marathwada on September 12-13.
For central India, heavy rainfall is likely over West Madhya Pradesh from September 12 to 14, in East Madhya Pradesh on September 11, throughout Vidarbha on September 12-13, and in Chhattisgarh on September 10-11 and September 13. Chhattisgarh is also expected to see isolated very heavy rainfall on September 12.
The IMD has issued warnings about squally winds reaching 40-50 kmph, with gusts up to 60 kmph, over the North and Central Bay of Bengal, as well as along and off the coasts of Bangladesh, West Bengal, Odisha, and North Andhra Pradesh in the next 48 hours. Fishermen are advised against venturing into these waters.
The forecasts and warnings provided by the department are valid from 8.30 am on the day of the announcement until 8.30 am the following day.
