Silchar: On Sunday, the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) arrested a Senior Section Engineer (SSE) from the Carriage and Wagon department of the Northeast Frontier Railway in Silchar, Assam, in connection with an alleged bribery case.
As per an official statement, the CBI reported that the accused demanded Rs 20,000 from a contractor who had filed a complaint, in exchange for clearing a pending bill of Rs 20 lakh. Following the registration of an “instant case” on June 13, the CBI set up a trap and caught the accused in the act of accepting the bribe.
The accused is scheduled to be presented before the Competent Court in Guwahati later today, and searches are currently being conducted at the accused’s residential premises.
The CBI registered the instant case on 13.06.2026 against the said accused. It was alleged that a bill amounting to approximately Rs. 20 Lakh, pertaining to work already executed by the complainant-contractor, was pending for clearance by the accused officer of NF Railway, Silchar. It was further alleged that when the complainant met the accused Sr. Section Engineer (SSE) on 12.06.2026 and requested him to clear the said bill, the accused demanded one per cent of the total pending bill amount as illegal gratification for processing and clearing the bill.
The CBI caught the accused red-handed while he was demanding and accepting a bribe of Rs. 20,000 from the complainant. Further investigations are ongoing, as stated by the CBI.
In a separate incident earlier on Thursday, the CBI apprehended a Security Inspector from the Orient Area of Mahanadi Coalfields Limited (MCL) in Brajaraja Nagar, Jharsuguda, Odisha, for another bribery case.
The CBI registered the case on Thursday, June 11, 2026, based on a complaint against the accused. It was alleged that the accused demanded a bribe of Rs. 5,000 from an MCL employee to grant him Sunday duty on a rotational basis. The CBI laid a trap on June 11, 2026, and caught the accused red-handed while accepting the bribe. The accused will also be presented in court on Friday.
