‘Arogya Van’ Initiative by NHAI to Plant 67,000 Medicinal Trees Along National Highways

'Arogya Van' Initiative by NHAI to Plant 67,000 Medicinal Trees Along National Highways

In a significant step towards fostering biodiversity and ecological sustainability, the National Highways Authority of India (NHAI) has introduced the ‘Arogya Van’ initiative, which focuses on the plantation of medicinal trees in vacant land areas adjacent to National Highways.

The project aims to bolster roadside ecosystems by incorporating tree species that benefit pollinators, birds, and microfauna, thereby improving overall ecological resilience.

The initial phase of ‘Arogya Van’ encompasses 17 land parcels covering 62.8 hectares, where approximately 67,462 medicinal trees are set to be planted.

This initiative will take place across several states, including Madhya Pradesh, Haryana, Delhi-NCR, Andhra Pradesh, Gujarat, Karnataka, Odisha, Tamil Nadu, Rajasthan, Maharashtra, and Chhattisgarh.

Around 36 tree species with recognized medicinal properties, such as Neem, Amla, Imli, Jamun, Lemon, Gular, and Maulsari, have been chosen based on the suitability of the respective agro-climatic zones.

Priority will be given to land near toll plazas, interchanges, wayside amenities, and cloverleaf junctions to enhance public visibility and awareness.

The plantation process will comply with Government of India guidelines on landscaping and tree planting.

Historically, highway plantations have utilized a combination of native and avenue trees for greening and ecological stabilization. However, this thematic approach not only aids in environmental restoration but also acts as an educational and cultural platform, showcasing India’s rich heritage of medicinal plants.

The ‘Arogya Van’ initiative is in line with the government’s efforts to promote traditional medicine systems like Ayurveda while conserving indigenous medicinal flora.
