A man in Odisha had a harrowing encounter with an elephant, surviving after being trampled and walking away from what many are calling a miraculous escape.
The incident occurred in the Talbarakot area of Dhenkanal district, where Vidyadhar Behera was confronted by a solitary elephant in the Govindpur-Talbarakot forest range. The moment, partially recorded on video, has garnered significant attention due to the shocking nature of the event.
In the footage, the elephant charges at Vidyadhar, knocking him to the ground. The situation escalates quickly as the elephant stands over him, pressing him down with its foot. The scene is intense and difficult to watch, with the animal’s large frame looming over the still man.
For several moments, the elephant remains in that position, applying pressure while Vidyadhar is pinned beneath it, unable to escape. Then, just as suddenly as the attack began, the elephant steps back. There was no apparent reason for this; no sudden noise or interruption. It simply turned and slowly retreated into the forest, leaving the injured man behind.
Despite the force of the encounter and visible injuries, Vidyadhar was seen regaining his composure and attempting to stand. He managed to get up and walk a short distance, a detail that caught the attention of many given the severity of the situation.
Locals quickly came to his aid and transported him to the Dhenkanal District Headquarters Hospital. Doctors confirmed that he sustained serious injuries to his legs, hands, and head. Although his condition remains critical, he is conscious and receiving treatment.
Forest officials also arrived at the hospital to evaluate the situation and have issued warnings to local residents. Villagers are advised to refrain from entering forested areas during early mornings and evenings, especially as a herd of nearly 30 elephants is currently moving within a 10-kilometre radius of the Sadar and Hindol ranges.
