Bhubaneswar: Vedanta Aluminium, the leading aluminium producer in India, highlighted the rich handloom heritage of Odisha at the Bhubaneswar Times Fashion Week 2026. The event featured the craftsmanship of its women-led initiative, VedSuta, which focuses on the traditional art of weaving.
In partnership with a fashion house, artisans from VedSuta transformed classic Sambalpuri sarees into stylish contemporary outfits for the runway. The event also featured women beneficiaries of VedSuta showcasing their own textile creations, bringing attention to the skilled artisans behind the intricate designs.
The collection merged the unique motifs, vibrant colors, and detailed weaving techniques characteristic of Sambalpuri textiles with modern silhouettes. This display not only celebrated the traditional sarees but also highlighted the adaptability of Odisha’s handloom heritage within the current fashion landscape.
Significantly, the event provided a platform for these women artisans to flaunt their skills in front of a broader audience, including fashion enthusiasts, industry experts, and potential buyers.
C Chandru, CEO of Vedanta Aluminium, remarked, “Odisha’s traditional crafts embody generations of skill, creativity, and cultural wisdom. Initiatives like VedSuta are designed to empower women artisans by opening doors to sustainable livelihoods while preserving this heritage. Their presence at Bhubaneswar Times Fashion Week showcases the opportunities that arise when grassroots enterprises are given larger platforms. We remain dedicated to fostering women-led ventures and enhancing the reach of local craftsmanship.”
Rinky Meher, a VedSuta artisan from Raghunathpali, shared her feelings about the event, stating, “We have watched Sambalpuri sarees being woven in our homes and communities for years. To see our work transformed into exquisite designer outfits and presented at a fashion show was an incredibly proud moment for us. It reinforces our belief that the skills we have honed can take us to new heights we once thought impossible.”
VedSuta is part of the broader livelihood development framework established by the Subhalaxmi Cooperative in 2008. Currently, the cooperative empowers over 5,500 women across 510 Self Help Groups in 106 villages of Jharsuguda, promoting financial inclusion, entrepreneurship, skill enhancement, and market access. Their initiatives span handloom textiles, terracotta crafts, jute products, and various rural enterprises, fostering increased participation of women in the local economy.
Beyond the runway, this showcase underscores Vedanta Aluminium’s commitment to bolstering rural entrepreneurship, safeguarding traditional craftsmanship, and generating sustainable livelihood opportunities. In FY26, the company’s community development efforts in Jharsuguda positively impacted over 700,000 lives across 61 villages, focusing on education, healthcare, livelihoods, women’s empowerment, and community infrastructure.
By linking grassroots enterprises to emerging markets and mainstream platforms, Vedanta Aluminium plays a vital role in India’s vision of Atmanirbhar Bharat, where traditional skills, women-led businesses, and local communities are essential to the nation’s development narrative.
