Severe Heat and Humidity Expected in Odisha Until June 9: IMD

The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has indicated that Odisha will experience no significant temperature changes over the next three days. While isolated norwester (Kalbaisakhi thunderstorm) activity may occur daily in some areas, hot and humid conditions are expected to continue until June 9 in various coastal districts and nearby regions.

According to the IMD, a trough line over central India is hindering moisture-laden winds from the Bay of Bengal from entering the state, leading to decreased moisture levels and a sudden rise in temperatures. The impact of this trough is anticipated to weaken in the next 2-3 days, but heatwave conditions may persist until June 9.

The IMD forecasts an increase in thunderstorm activity starting June 11, with light rainfall expected across the state around June 13-14, potentially signaling the onset of the monsoon in Odisha. A clearer understanding of the monsoon’s arrival is expected soon.

On Friday, many areas in the state faced extreme heat, with Boudh recording the highest maximum temperature at 41.7°C, followed by Sambalpur at 41.2°C, and both Bhubaneswar and Angul at 41.1°C. Jharsuguda, Balangir, Talcher, and Nayagarh reached 41°C, while Hirakud, Paralakhemundi, Titlagarh, Dhenkanal, and Khordha recorded temperatures of 40°C. In coastal regions, temperatures exceeded 39°C in several locations, with Chandbali at 39.6°C and Cuttack at 39.4°C.

Despite Bhubaneswar’s maximum temperature reaching 41°C, residents experienced a “feels-like” temperature of around 50°C due to high humidity, resulting in extremely uncomfortable conditions. The IMD has urged the public to take necessary precautions against the heat and to stay hydrated.
