Police Officer Sentenced to Four Years for Bribery Offense

Bhubaneswar: A police assistant sub-inspector (ASI) has been sentenced to four years of rigorous imprisonment (RI) following a conviction in a bribery case by a Vigilance court in Odisha.

On Thursday, the Special Judge of Vigilance in Kataka convicted Amiya Kumar Behera, the former ASI of Jenapur Police Station in Jajpur district, who is currently assigned to Athagada Police Station in Kataka district. This ruling was made in relation to a corruption case filed by Odisha Vigilance under the Prevention of Corruption Act, 1988. In addition to the prison sentence, the court also imposed a monetary fine on Behera.

As per an official statement from Vigilance, Behera faced charges for soliciting and accepting a bribe from a complainant to settle a miscellaneous allegation that had been filed against him at the Jenapur Police Station.

Following his conviction, Behera was taken into judicial custody to begin serving his sentence.

Odisha Vigilance has announced plans to approach the relevant authority to initiate the process for Behera’s dismissal from service, in line with regulations regarding convictions in corruption cases.
