The reunion of a long-lost family member has sparked both joy and sorrow, as the man who held out hope for her return, Dinabandhu, is no longer alive to witness this remarkable moment.

In Kendrapara, Odisha, a tattoo on an elderly woman’s hand has achieved what decades of searching could not: it has reunited Pramila Mallik with her family.

Pramila, who hails from Nandalalpatana village in the Pattamundai block of Kendrapara district, vanished over 35 years ago.

She had been married to Dinabandhu Mallik and left for her parental home in Baluria just 37 days after giving birth, struggling with mental health challenges. Unfortunately, she never returned.

Her family embarked on extensive searches in vain. As time passed, hope dwindled, and Dinabandhu, believing that Pramila was lost forever, married her younger sister Urmila to care for their infant son.

Life continued without her. The boy grew up, and the family expanded, but three years ago, Dinabandhu passed away never knowing if his first wife was still alive.

The significant breakthrough occurred far from Odisha, in the mountainous region of Himachal Pradesh.

An elderly woman was living a quiet life in the Balh area of Mandi district, her past concealed from the locals. During a casual chat, an Odia man recognized a small tattoo on her hand featuring a name written in the Odia script.

This single discovery initiated a series of communications. Photos were exchanged, village elders were consulted, and connections were made that led back to Pramila’s family in Kendrapara, who had been searching since 1990.

For her son, who was only 37 days old at the time of her disappearance, the first glimpse of his mother came through a video call. Although he saw an unfamiliar face, the bond between them remained strong, leading to an emotional reunion.

While the return of Pramila has brought happiness, it also underscores the sorrow of her husband’s absence, as Dinabandhu is no longer there to celebrate this miraculous event.

The family, believing this reunion to be a blessing from Lord Jagannath, is now preparing to bring Pramila back to her home in Odisha, a home that has remained welcoming for 35 long years.
