Bhubaneswar: In a notable achievement in the battle against interstate drug trafficking, Odisha’s Special Task Force (STF) has detained three individuals linked to an organized cannabis smuggling operation with ties to Rajasthan.
This action is part of the STF’s ongoing data-focused initiative aimed at dismantling drug syndicates that operate across state lines. The case relates to STF PS Case No. 08, filed on April 18, 2026, under various sections of the NDPS Act.
On the same date, the STF intercepted an Eicher container truck (GJ-27-TD-1541) on NH-16 near Pitapali in Khordha district, confiscating a significant haul of 227.400 kg of ganja, which was en route from Adava in Gajapati district to Rajasthan.
Following a thorough investigation that combined technical evidence, field intelligence, and witness accounts, the STF apprehended the three suspects from Ganjam district. They have been identified as Sibaram Biswal (38) from Badadanda Sahi, Sibaram Patra (33) from Chanameri, and Kana Mitu, also known as Manoranjan Sabat (49), a resident of Brajaraja Nagar.
Kana Mitu has a history of multiple criminal charges, including serious offenses recorded at the Dharakote and Berhampur police stations. Similarly, Sibaram Biswal has a prior NDPS case registered against him in Maharashtra. During their search operations, the STF discovered Rs 3.86 lakh in cash at Sibaram Biswal’s home, along with mobile phones and other incriminating evidence. The origins of this cash are being investigated as potential drug trafficking proceeds.
The STF has indicated that the detained individuals were instrumental in the procurement, storage, and interstate transfer of large quantities of ganja from Odisha to Rajasthan and beyond. They are expected to be presented before the jurisdictional Magistrate today.
Furthermore, the STF plans to request police custody for Sibaram Biswal and Kana Mitu to delve deeper into the broader network, financial connections, and additional members of the syndicate. As part of a comprehensive strategy, the STF is compiling an extensive dossier on interstate drug mafias and has reached out for cooperation from the Crime Branches of other states.
Recently, STF teams conducted visits to Gujarat and Rajasthan as part of their investigation. This operation underscores the STF’s intensified campaign against organized narcotics offenders operating within and from Odisha.
