Odisha's Chief Minister Cancels Diwali Festivities in Support of Cyclone and Flood Victims

Odisha Chief Minister Mohan Charan Majhi has opted to cancel the Diwali festivities at his home due to the devastation caused by Cyclone Arnab and the ensuing floods. He has asked the public to refrain from bringing gifts or flowers and to assist the families impacted across the state.

Bhubaneswar: This year, the Chief Minister of Odisha, Mohan Charan Majhi, has called off Diwali celebrations at his residence in light of the widespread damage and hardship inflicted by Cyclone Arnab and the subsequent flooding that has affected various regions of the state.

According to a statement from the Chief Minister’s Office (CMO), the Diwali festivities at Majhi’s residence have been officially cancelled. The Chief Minister has urged citizens not to present gifts or bouquets during this period.

“The Hon’ble Chief Minister has appealed to the public to remain sensitive to those in the affected regions and to provide support to those who have suffered due to the disaster,” stated the CMO in a post on X.

Previously, Majhi had also opted out of Durga Puja celebrations to show solidarity with farmers who faced crop losses from heavy rains in October, choosing not to visit any puja pandals during that time.

The southern districts of the state have been hit particularly hard by the heavy rains and flooding associated with Cyclone Arnab, resulting in the displacement of thousands and significant destruction of property and crops.
