IMD Warns of Heavy Rainfall Across Several States, Odisha on High Alert

The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has released a rainfall warning for the upcoming 24 hours, indicating heavy to very heavy precipitation across several states. Odisha is anticipated to experience the most intense weather, including isolated instances of extremely heavy rainfall.

On Friday, the IMD’s latest weather bulletin detailed that the warning will be in effect until 8:30 AM IST on August 8. Residents and local authorities in the impacted areas are urged to stay vigilant as strong monsoon activity is expected to persist.

Odisha is projected to endure the harshest weather conditions, with forecasts indicating heavy to very heavy rains, along with isolated occurrences of extremely heavy rainfall. The state has recently been under active monsoon conditions, leading to concerns about potential waterlogging, flooding in low-lying regions, and disruptions to daily life if the rainfall intensifies.

Warnings for Other Regions

The IMD has also predicted heavy to very heavy rainfall in isolated areas of Coastal Karnataka, East Madhya Pradesh, East Rajasthan, Kerala and Mahe, as well as South Interior Karnataka over the next 24 hours. Additionally, significant rainfall is expected in various locations across the country, including the Andaman and Nicobar Islands, Arunachal Pradesh, Assam and Meghalaya, Bihar, Chhattisgarh, East Uttar Pradesh, Gangetic West Bengal, Haryana, Chandigarh and Delhi, Himachal Pradesh, Jharkhand, Lakshadweep, Madhya Maharashtra, Nagaland, Manipur, Mizoram and Tripura, North Interior Karnataka, Tamil Nadu, Puducherry and Karaikal, Uttarakhand, and West Madhya Pradesh.

Enhancing Weather Monitoring

In a bid to improve weather monitoring and the timely dissemination of warnings for extreme weather events, including heavy rainfall and potential cloudbursts, the IMD is launching an X-Band Doppler Weather Radar (DWR) project in Pulpally, located in Wayanad district of Kerala.
