Bhubaneswar: Concerns over flooding are growing across various regions of Odisha as water levels in key reservoirs and barrages continue to increase on Monday.

As reported, the Hirakud reservoir’s water level is on the rise, reaching 629.39 feet by 10 am, with an inflow of 648,539 cusecs and an outflow of 496,069 cusecs. Currently, water is being released through 28 gates.

In the Sukhasoda area upstream, floodwaters have breached the embankment, affecting nearby villages and inundating hundreds of hectares of agricultural land. Additionally, water levels at Mundali are also rising; as of 9 am, the barrage recorded a flow of 760,262 cusecs. The upstream water level was noted at 91.90 feet, while the downstream level measured 89.60 feet. The discharge rate increased by approximately 6,000 cusecs per hour between 9 and 10 am, suggesting a further escalation in water flow.

The heightened discharge has raised alarm about potential flooding in low-lying areas.

In response, officials from the Kataka district administration are worried about possible waterlogging in Banki, Badamba, and Athagada within their district, as well as in Kanas, Nimapada, and Gop in Puri district, Erasama and Balikuda in Jagatsinghpur district, and Patkura and Derabish in Kendrapada district.

Meanwhile, the Jalaput reservoir in Koraput has initiated its first floodwater discharge of the season, with two gates opened to release 6,000 cusecs of water. The reservoir’s full capacity is 2,750 feet, and the current water level is at 2,747.05 feet. Local authorities have issued alerts to villages along the Andhra Pradesh-Odisha border and are closely monitoring the situation, advising residents in at-risk areas to stay vigilant.
