Residents in Delhi-NCR awoke to overcast skies and light rain on Tuesday, July 28, providing a much-needed respite from the oppressive humidity that persisted for several days. Following a brief period of scattered showers earlier this month, the monsoon has resumed its activity.
Students, daily commuters, and office workers may once again encounter travel disruptions. The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued an orange alert, warning of additional rainfall expected in the coming hours. Meteorological officials noted that the morning rains had progressed towards east Delhi and eastern NCR, where residents can anticipate more light rainfall. Furthermore, they predict the formation of new thunderstorms over Haryana later today, which could lead to increased rainfall and thunderstorm activity across Delhi-NCR by evening.
Monsoon’s Return to Delhi
This recent surge in rainfall is attributed to a deep depression—a slow-moving low-pressure system that initially formed over the northwest Bay of Bengal before shifting towards Odisha and West Bengal. This weather pattern draws in moisture-laden winds from the sea, directing that humidity towards northern India, ultimately resulting in widespread rainfall.
At the same time, a weather trough near Delhi is causing warm, humid air to rise. As this air ascends, it cools, leading to the formation of rain clouds and often accompanying thunderstorms.
Heavy rainfall typically occurs in concentrated bands, which are narrow zones of intense precipitation. The relatively flat terrain of Delhi-NCR allows the rain to disperse evenly, while nearby hilly areas often receive much heavier rainfall due to the same moist air being forced upward.
Upcoming Weather Forecast
The IMD has also issued a yellow alert for Wednesday, indicating overcast conditions with light to moderate rain and potential thunderstorms throughout the day.
Daytime temperatures are expected to range between 32°C and 35°C, providing some relief from the recent heat wave that saw temperatures nearing 38°C.
Rain is predicted to continue into Thursday and throughout the weekend, which could help alleviate the monsoon rainfall deficit for the month. Meteorologists suggest that this ongoing weather pattern demonstrates how a system located hundreds of kilometers away can consistently supply moisture to northern India, resulting in extensive and widespread rainfall across the region.
