The controversy intensified following the release of the film’s teaser on YouTube, leading to protests across Odisha, including opposition from the Shree Jagannath Temple Administration.
The film was later shown to the Temple Administration and Puri’s Gajapati Maharaja, who reportedly voiced several objections. The petitioners claimed that although the producer had promised to implement changes, the film was ultimately released without significant alterations.
High Court Issues Stay on Film’s Release
Subsequently, the High Court issued a stay on the film’s release, emphasizing that freedom of expression must not infringe upon religious beliefs. Chief Justice Harish Tandon and Justice Murahari Sri Raman noted, “At times it creates an immediate influence and at times may shatter the sentiments, the emotions and the religious belief, which cannot be allowed, if it results in unrest in the peaceful society.”
Response from the Filmmakers
The filmmakers have expressed that ‘Mahaprabhu Jagannath’ was produced with deep respect for Lord Jagannath and was never intended to offend anyone’s religious feelings. They have since approached the Supreme Court to contest the stay on the film.
They stated, “The film is a heartfelt depiction of a devotee’s bhav (devotion) towards Mahaprabhu Jagannath, and we make no claim otherwise. We deeply respect the sentiments of every devotee and everyone who follows the path of Lord Jagannath. We simply hope audiences get the opportunity to watch the film and decide for themselves.
