A delegation from the Biju Janata Dal (BJD) approached the Odisha State Commission for Protection of Child Rights (OSCPCR) on Monday, seeking an investigation into the purported use of children during a political rally organized by the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP). In their complaint, the BJD requested that notices be issued to Chief Minister Mohan Charan Majhi, BJP State president Manmohan Samal, and former MLA Pravat Ranjan Biswal, who joined the BJP along with his supporters on Sunday.

The BJD’s complaint specifically referenced a rally held on July 12, which was marked by Biswal’s joining of the BJP. The party claimed that numerous minors were observed at the event, donned in BJP caps and holding party flags, placards, and banners. They stated, “The participation of children in a political rally in such a manner raises serious concerns regarding their rights, welfare, and protection. Children should not be involved in political activities or rallies in a manner that may expose them to political influence or public mobilisation.”

The BJD has urged the commission to take this issue seriously and conduct a thorough investigation into the alleged involvement of minors in the July 12 rally in Bhubaneswar. Furthermore, they requested that the OSCPCR issue notices to CM Majhi, BJP State president Samal, and Biswal, asking for their explanations regarding the children’s participation in the political event. The BJD emphasized, “Take appropriate action in accordance with the law and issue suitable directions to ensure that children are not used in political rallies, demonstrations, or campaigns in the future. We have full faith that the Hon’ble Commission will take immediate cognisance of this matter and take the necessary steps to safeguard the rights and best interests of children.”
