Pioneering Female Electric Bus Driver in Odisha Sets Example for Inclusive Transport

Shubhalakshmi Mahananda, recognized by the state government as the first woman to operate an electric bus in Odisha, is setting a precedent for women’s involvement in non-traditional roles within public transport. This development comes as Bhubaneswar gears up to host the 19th Urban Mobility India (UMI) Conference and Expo on October 23 and 24.

Mahananda drives an Ama Bus under the Capital Region Urban Transport (CRUT) in Kendujhar, where the fleet consists of 25 electric buses housed in a dedicated depot. Her role not only signifies a step forward in electric public transport but also aims to enhance women’s participation in this field.

According to a press release, operating a passenger bus demands a combination of technical skills, vigilance, and a strong sense of responsibility for the safety of passengers. Mahananda developed her expertise through specialized training and hands-on experience.

The report also connects the growth of electric buses in Kendujhar to Odisha’s commitment to advancing cleaner public transit options. Electric buses are known to lower local air pollution levels when compared to traditional diesel buses, although specific data on emissions reductions or operating costs for this fleet were not disclosed.

Odisha’s initiatives in public mobility include services like Ama Bus, Ama E-Ride, and various digital mobility options, all aimed at linking citizens to employment opportunities and essential services.

The upcoming conference is anticipated to gather policymakers, urban planners, and mobility specialists to engage in discussions about accessible, sustainable, and technology-driven transportation systems, coinciding with the National Urban Conclave 2026.

Krushna Chandra Mahapatra, the Minister of Housing and Urban Development, remarked that these events will serve as a forum for stakeholders to explore sustainable and inclusive urban growth. He highlighted Mahananda’s achievements as a reflection of the state’s dedication to empowering women and fostering new opportunities.

Her journey contributes a workforce perspective to ongoing discussions about electric vehicles, digital services, and transport infrastructure, emphasizing that the shift towards cleaner mobility also raises critical questions about accessibility to employment in the sector and involvement in the evolution of public transport.
