Biramitrapur (Sundaragada): On Tuesday, life in Biramitrapur town faced significant disruption as locals, along with various organizations, staged a 12-hour strike to demand urgent repairs for the severely damaged stretch of NH-143 from Talsara to the Jharkhand border.
The strike commenced at 6 am and is set to conclude at 6 pm. Demonstrators blocked key roads throughout the town, which impeded traffic and led to considerable inconvenience for travelers.
However, emergency services, such as ambulances, fire trucks, and vehicles from the electricity department, were permitted to operate during the bandh.
The protest received backing from groups like the Odisha Driver Mahasangha, Biramitrapur Auto Association, along with other local organizations and residents. Protesters criticized the National Highways Authority of India (NHAI) for not taking effective action to repair the highway despite numerous requests.
Reports indicate that the stretch of NH-143 between Talsara and Jharkhand is in a dire state, with many sections severely damaged and filled with deep potholes. Locals expressed that the worsening road conditions have made travel challenging and heightened the likelihood of accidents.
“The residents of Biramitrapur are encountering serious issues due to the poor state of the road. Many segments between Talsara and Jharkhand are entirely ruined. There are potholes reaching depths of two to three feet, and accidents occur almost daily. The road has become perilous for commuters,” stated local resident Bikram Pattnaik.
Additionally, residents voiced concerns that the road’s deteriorating condition has impacted their daily activities. During the rainy season, waterlogging and damaged sections hinder movement, while dry weather brings dust pollution that troubles both residents and travelers.
Another local, Sashi Sagar, noted that they had previously approached the district administration for prompt action.
“We informed the Collector and requested action within five days. However, after five days passed without any response, we felt compelled to hold a 12-hour bandh. The damaged roads are causing significant challenges. In rainy periods, it becomes hard to go out, and in dry conditions, dust spreads throughout the area,” Sagar remarked.
The protesters are demanding swift repairs and restoration of NH-143 and have urged the NHAI to take immediate measures to enhance the highway’s condition.
They are also seeking intervention from the district administration to ensure that repair efforts commence without any further delay.
As of the time of this report, there has been no immediate comment from NHAI officials or local authorities regarding the protesters’ claims.
