Paralakhemundi: In a tragic event reported Friday, a woman and her seven-year-old son lost their lives after being bitten by snakes while they slept in their home located in Gajapati district. The individuals have been identified as 30-year-old Lalita Bada Raita and her son, Amit Bada Raita, both residents of Kadamatal village in the Jalang panchayat of the Rayagada block.

As recounted by family members, Lalita, along with her husband Ajay Bada Raita, their son, and their one-and-a-half-year-old daughter, were asleep on Thursday night when two banded kraits entered their house around 2 am and bit Lalita and Amit on their hands.

Upon hearing their screams, Ajay awoke to discover the snakes in their home. The family quickly transported the victims to the Rayagada Community Health Centre. However, as their condition worsened, they were referred to the District Headquarters Hospital in Paralakhemundi for more comprehensive care.

Despite the medical interventions, both Lalita and Amit passed away while receiving treatment at the hospital, as confirmed by officials. The incident has brought sorrow to the community of Kadamatal. Snakebites continue to pose a significant public health issue in rural areas of Odisha, especially during the monsoon season when snakes often seek shelter in homes.

Local officials have advised residents to stay alert and to seek prompt medical attention if bitten by a snake.
