A 73-year-old resident of Odisha, Sukadev Nayak, traveled approximately 150 kilometers on a tricycle to reach the MKCG Medical College and Hospital in Berhampur, due to financial difficulties preventing him from accessing medical care for his fractured leg.

Nayak, who hails from Nayagarh district, managed to cover this distance over almost two days, pedaling the tricycle himself while enduring significant pain from a fracture in his left leg.

Having previously served as a village watchman, Nayak explained that he could not afford timely medical assistance following his accident. With no one available to accompany him and limited financial resources, he resolved to make the challenging trek to Berhampur in search of treatment at the government facility.

Throughout his journey, he relied on the kindness of strangers for food, as he lacked the funds to purchase meals. Despite facing pain and fatigue, he persevered until arriving at the hospital.

Reflecting on his ordeal, Nayak shared that it took him nearly two days to reach Berhampur. He revealed that his wife passed away in 2011 and that his son suffers from mental health issues, rendering him unable to work, which has placed the family in dire financial straits. Nayak expressed hope that receiving medical treatment would aid his recovery and allow him to walk again.

Upon learning of his situation, MKCG Medical College and Hospital officials admitted him for assessment. The hospital administration has indicated that doctors will carry out necessary examinations to evaluate the severity of his injuries before outlining a treatment plan.

Officials also guaranteed that Nayak would receive the essential medical attention at the government hospital.
