Bhubaneswar: Odisha has been chosen to initiate a pilot project for an artificial intelligence (AI)-based system designed to monitor child growth. This innovative technology can evaluate important health metrics such as weight and height using videos captured on mobile phones, according to officials who spoke on Thursday.

The Wadhwani Foundation showcased this technology during the state’s World Breastfeeding Week 2026 celebrations. The AI solution provides assessments of a child’s weight, height, head circumference, chest circumference, and Mid-Upper Arm Circumference (MUAC) through video analysis.

During the event, Deputy Chief Minister Pravati Parida reiterated the state government’s dedication to promoting breastfeeding as a fundamental aspect of child health. “Mother’s milk is the initial shield of protection for a child’s healthy life. Exclusive breastfeeding for the first six months establishes a foundation for a healthy child and a robust future,” she stated, encouraging families and communities to actively support mothers in providing optimal nutrition for infants.

The event was organized by the Women and Child Development (WCD) department and saw participation from young children and their parents. The program was led by Commissioner-cum-Secretary Mrinalini Darswal, with Director Monisha Banerjee giving the welcome address. Darswal referred to breast milk as a child’s ‘first vaccine’ and the most nourishing food source.

She stressed that breastfeeding should commence within the first hour after birth, continue exclusively for the initial six months, and thereafter be supplemented with appropriate foods while maintaining breastfeeding up to two years, to ensure the child’s physical, mental, and cognitive development. She also pointed out the vital role that fathers and family members play in supporting mothers and fostering an environment conducive to healthy child growth.

To encourage healthy early childhood practices, nutrition baskets containing fruits and childcare kits were distributed to parents of children aged 0 to 6 years attending the event. Department officials and consultants also participated, reaffirming their commitment to promoting breastfeeding, enhancing maternal and child nutrition, and ensuring a healthier future for every child.
