Andhra Pradesh Reports Covid-19 Resurgence with Two Fatalities and Eight Cases

In Andhra Pradesh, health officials are responding to a recent rise in Covid-19 cases, reporting two fatalities and eight positive cases in the past few weeks. To prevent further escalation, authorities are intensifying their monitoring efforts. Among the deceased is a 52-year-old man from YSR Kadapa district, who tested positive after experiencing symptoms such as fever and cough. Another patient, aged 43, also tested positive and faced serious health complications, leading to both individuals’ deaths while under hospital care. In light of these developments, the Health Department has mobilized specialized rapid response teams to the affected district.

In a related incident, Jaan Kumar Sanu, a singer and son of renowned playback artist Kumar Sanu, was hospitalized in Mumbai after testing positive for Covid-19. He disclosed this information via an Instagram video on July 12.

Due to the fatalities in Andhra Pradesh, the Odisha government has implemented targeted screening measures in bordering districts, including Malkangiri, Koraput, Rayagada, Gajapati, Ganjam, and Nabarangpur. Although Odisha currently has no confirmed cases, the government has reinforced border surveillance to mitigate any potential spread of the virus.

Is there a cause for concern among the Indian populace?

Experts suggest that there is no immediate reason for alarm, as the recent increases in cases are localized and limited in scope. Most of the Indian population has developed robust hybrid immunity through previous infections and widespread vaccination, keeping the risk of severe outbreaks low.

“Reports indicate that two individuals in the Kadapa area of AP have died from Covid-19, followed by the diagnosis of additional cases. This situation is definitely not an increased call for panic or anything. The two deaths are significant because both patients had comorbid conditions, such as uncontrolled diabetes, liver issues, kidney problems, or other health concerns,” explains Dr. Dilip Gude, Senior Consultant Physician at Yashoda Hospitals, Hyderabad.

Dr. Gude emphasizes that individuals with existing health problems might experience severe illness even from common viruses, not just Covid-19, and may require intensive care. He reassures that there is no reason to panic.

The measures being taken by state health departments are standard practice aimed at curbing local transmission before it spreads further. However, it is important for individuals to remain vigilant for any emerging symptoms.

Symptoms to watch for include those similar to the common flu, and individuals in affected regions should seek medical attention promptly if they experience any symptoms for timely testing.

To minimize the risk of infection, the following precautions are recommended:

  • Wear a properly fitting mask when entering hospitals, clinics, or crowded indoor areas.
  • Wash hands thoroughly with soap and water for at least 20 seconds, or use an alcohol-based hand sanitizer frequently.
  • If you experience fever or respiratory symptoms, remain at home to prevent spreading the virus.
  • Exercise additional caution around vulnerable populations such as senior citizens, pregnant women, and those with pre-existing conditions like diabetes or hypertension, who are at greater risk for severe illness.

Dr. Gude further notes, “Covid-19 is not returning. However, individuals with liver disease, kidney disease, uncontrolled diabetes, or heart disease need to be particularly attentive to symptoms like a productive cough, high fever, and difficulty breathing.”

It is advisable to rely on updates from the Health Ministry or local health departments for accurate information.

While Covid-19 is not over, it serves as a reminder that the virus has become endemic, and occasional cases or small outbreaks may still occur. There are effective systems in place, including surveillance and genomic testing, to manage these situations. Dr. Shivaraj A L, Lead Consultant and HOD – Pulmonology at Aster Whitefield Hospitals, recommends caution rather than panic, urging those with respiratory symptoms to avoid contact with others, get tested as advised, and consult healthcare professionals if they belong to vulnerable groups. Basic preventive measures like respiratory etiquette, regular handwashing, and vaccinations for eligible individuals remain vital. The focus should shift to preparing for and protecting vulnerable populations rather than fearing a widespread resurgence of Covid-19 in the country.

In Andhra Pradesh, the Health Department has dispatched Rapid Response Teams to trace contacts, set up a dedicated control room, and initiated sanitation efforts in affected regions. Meanwhile, Odisha has intensified border surveillance, while Maharashtra maintains a low level of Covid-19 activity with only sporadic cases detected.
