Understanding the Jagannath Rath Yatra 2026: Chariot Details and Differences

The Jagannath Rath Yatra is scheduled to begin on July 16, 2026, when the three deities will be ceremoniously moved to the Gundicha Temple in Puri, Odisha.

This historic festival is expected to attract millions of devotees from India and worldwide. During the event, Lord Jagannath, along with his siblings, Balabhadra and Subhadra, embark on a sacred journey in three grand wooden chariots from the Jagannath Temple to the Gundicha Temple.

The impressive chariots are drawn by thousands of devotees using thick ropes, an act deemed highly auspicious. However, many newcomers to the event may struggle to distinguish which chariot belongs to each deity. Thankfully, the chariots are differentiated by their unique colors, flags, and identifiable features.

Lord Jagannath’s Chariot: Nandighosha

Lord Jagannath rides in the largest chariot, known as Nandighosha.

  • Colours: Red and Yellow
  • Wheels: 16
  • Flag: Trilokyamohini
  • Symbol: Hanuman

Also referred to as Garudadhwaja, this towering chariot transports Lord Jagannath to the Gundicha Temple, which is often viewed as the residence of his maternal aunt. A massive chariot painted in red and yellow is a clear indication of Lord Jagannath’s presence.

Lord Balabhadra’s Chariot: Taladhwaja

Next is Lord Balabhadra’s chariot, known as Taladhwaja, which is slightly smaller than Nandighosha.

  • Colours: Red and Green
  • Wheels: 14
  • Flag: Unnani
  • Symbol: Palm tree

The unique combination of red and green makes Balabhadra’s chariot easily recognizable during the procession.

Goddess Subhadra’s Chariot: Darpadalana

The smallest chariot belongs to Goddess Subhadra and is known as Darpadalana.

  • Colours: Red and Black
  • Wheels: 12
  • Flag: Nadambika
  • Symbol: Lotus

Despite its smaller size, Darpadalana is a vital part of the Rath Yatra procession.

Rath Yatra 2026 Schedule

The festivities will kick off on July 16, 2026, with the three deities being taken to the Gundicha Temple.

The return journey, called Bahuda Yatra or Return Rath Yatra, is set for July 24, as the chariots make their way back to the Jagannath Temple.

The celebrations will conclude on July 27 with the Niladri Bije ritual, marking the deities’ return to their temple sanctum.

Whether you plan to attend the Rath Yatra in person or watch it remotely, being familiar with the colors and characteristics of each chariot can enhance your experience of one of India’s most revered religious festivals.
