The Odisha Society of UK has expressed deep disappointment over ISKCON’s decision to conduct the Snana Yatra in Watford and the Rath Yatra in London, claiming it deviates from the sacred scriptures and long-standing traditions associated with Lord Jagannath.
In a recent statement, the society noted that celebrating these important festivals on non-prescribed dates has led to “profound sadness and spiritual concern” among Jagannath devotees globally.
The organization referenced a meeting held with Shree Nila Madhav Prabhu at Bhaktivedanta Manor, Watford, on May 2, where, despite a ‘warm and uplifting’ interaction, ISKCON London chose to proceed with the festivals on dates that differ from those outlined in sacred texts and ancient practices.
It emphasized that observing the Snana Yatra and Rath Yatra on the correct dates is not merely a customary or regional practice, but a ‘Divine Commandment’ originating from Lord Jagannath Himself and reiterated by Lord Brahma.
The Society further highlighted that these injunctions were compiled and preserved by Maharshi Vedavyasa in the Mahapuranas and associated scriptures, upheld by Jagadguru Adi Sankaracharya, honored by Sri Chaitanya Deva at Nilachala Dhama, and later propagated globally by His Divine Grace Srila Prabhupada during the early years of ISKCON’s Jagannath worship outside India.
