Relief from Heatwave Expected as IMD Forecasts Monsoon Onset; Heavy Rain Predicted for Several States Today

Widespread rainfall is anticipated to provide relief from the ongoing heatwave conditions across much of India, as the India Meteorological Department (IMD) forecasts the arrival of the monsoon in the next two to three days.

The weather department indicates that conditions are now favorable for the further advancement of the southwest monsoon into parts of the southwest and southeast Arabian Sea, southwest, southeast, and east-central Bay of Bengal, as well as the remaining areas of the Andaman Sea over the next 2-3 days.

In the meantime, heavy rains are expected to impact parts of northeast and south India today.

Here is a breakdown of the states likely to experience rain today:

Heavy rain alerts:

  • Northeast India: Arunachal Pradesh, Assam, and Meghalaya are forecasted to receive heavy rainfall at isolated locations.
  • South India: Interior Karnataka (both North and South) is preparing for isolated heavy rainfall, high-speed thundersqualls, and isolated hailstorms, particularly in north interior Karnataka. Coastal Andhra Pradesh and Yanam are expected to experience rain accompanied by high-speed thundersqualls.
  • East India: Widespread rain with isolated heavy showers is anticipated in Sub-Himalayan West Bengal and Sikkim. Gangetic West Bengal and Jharkhand are also forecasted to receive rain with high-speed thundersqualls. In Bihar, the IMD has predicted light-to-moderate rain, with heavy downpours and high-speed thundersqualls expected at isolated places.

The Andaman & Nicobar Islands are also under a forecast for isolated heavy rainfall.

Widespread light-to-moderate rain:

  • Northeast: Light to moderate rains are predicted for Nagaland, Manipur, Mizoram, and Tripura, accompanied by gusty winds.
  • South India: Kerala, Mahe, and Lakshadweep will also experience light rains with winds reaching up to 50 km/h.

Scattered/isolated light-to-moderate rain:

The weather department has predicted isolated light to moderate rains for Tamil Nadu, Puducherry, Karaikal, Telangana, Rayalaseema, and Odisha.
