Kothagudem: N. Balaram, the former Chairman and Managing Director of Singareni Collieries Company Limited (SCCL), was honored at a grand civic reception in Hyderabad on Sunday, where notable figures commended his transformational leadership and dedication to social welfare.
The event, held at Suravaram Pratap Reddy Auditorium in Basheerbagh, saw participation from former civil servants, public representatives, employee union leaders, social activists, and a large crowd of SCCL employees from various operational regions. Former Chief Secretary Kaki Madhava Rao praised Balaram as a unique leader who emerged from modest beginnings and maintained a strong connection to the community even after reaching high office. He stressed that those in positions of power should remain grounded and continue to serve society. Rao noted that while many view him as a role model, he personally sees Balaram as an inspiration.
Speakers at the event highlighted the substantial financial and operational advancements made by SCCL during Balaram’s leadership. They pointed out that the company’s turnover increased from Rs 22,882 crore to Rs 37,000 crore, along with significant growth in gross profit and net worth. Improvements in credit ratings and increased investment inflows were also mentioned as indicators of the company’s enhanced financial standing. Balaram was acknowledged for expanding SCCL’s operations beyond Telangana, with initiatives in Odisha, Rajasthan, and Karnataka in coal, power generation, and mineral exploration. His tenure also introduced several employee welfare programs, including a free accident insurance scheme with coverage of Rs 1 crore. Environmental sustainability was another priority during his leadership, with speakers recognizing his active participation in plantation drives that resulted in the planting of thousands of saplings across operational areas.
In his speech, Balaram expressed appreciation to the state leadership for the opportunity to lead the 137-year-old organization. He mentioned that long-term strategies had been established to ensure ongoing growth and to create job opportunities for future generations. He also thanked his colleagues, employees, and stakeholders for their unwavering support throughout his career.
During the event, a book documenting Balaram’s contributions to environmental protection was launched, serving as a tribute to his commitment to sustainable development.
