Shiva Cement has achieved regulatory clearance to commercially extract and market 2.4 million tonnes of dolomite each year from its Khatkurbahal (North) block in Odisha. This move not only establishes a new income source but also bolsters the raw material security for the cement operations of the JSW Group.
The approval was granted following the issuance of a revised Environmental Clearance and a Consent to Operate by the State Pollution Control Board of Odisha on July 28. This authorization permits commercial production and sale of dolomite with an annual capacity of 2.4 million tonnes from the mine located in Biringatoli, within the Kutra tehsil of the Sundargarh district. The consent is valid until March 31, 2027.
Shiva Cement reports that the Khatkurbahal (North) mining block holds a total of 89.09 million tonnes of dolomite resources, 48.27 million tonnes of which are deemed mineable. The newly authorized commercial activities are anticipated to establish an additional merchant sales sector, ensuring a consistent supply of mineral resources for the broader JSW ecosystem.
Manoj Kumar Rustagi, Whole-time Director and CEO of Shiva Cement, stated that the regulatory approval allows the firm to capitalize on an existing mineral asset while adhering to environmental standards. He further mentioned that monetizing the dolomite reserves will diversify the company’s revenue streams beyond its primary cement business and enhance long-term raw material accessibility for the group.
Dolomite is a crucial industrial mineral utilized in steelmaking, cement production, glass manufacturing, and refractory applications, making this approval strategically important for both the company and related industries.
This recent development follows the commissioning of a 1.0 million tonnes per annum cement grinding unit by Shiva Cement in Sambalpur, Odisha, thereby expanding its manufacturing capabilities. With the new mining approval, the company anticipates improved operational integration and the introduction of a new revenue source through merchant dolomite sales.
