On November 2, 2026, schools in various districts of Andhra Pradesh, along with Chennai and Tiruvallur, are set to remain closed due to an impending cyclone that is forecasted to impact the region. Following the recent Arnab cyclone, which persisted for a week, the Indian Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued alerts for Cyclone Murasu, classified as a “severe cyclonic storm.” Several districts have been placed on red alert, urging residents to exercise caution.
In Andhra Pradesh, school holidays have been enforced in districts including NTR District (Vijayawada), Palnadu, Nellore, and Gudur on the same date. Officials noted that schools may serve as emergency shelters during the storm. Despite students receiving the day off, teachers and non-teaching staff are required to report for emergency duties related to relief and restoration efforts. The duration of these holidays may be extended based on the storm’s progression.
Similarly, in Odisha, the Malkangiri district has announced a three-day school closure from November 2 to November 4.
In Chennai, District Collector S. Malathi Helan has confirmed that schools will close on November 2, 2026, in response to severe weather forecasts. Precautionary measures have also been taken to close schools in the Tiruvallur district.
The IMD reports that Cyclone Murasu is currently situated over the Westcentral and adjoining Southwest Bay of Bengal, moving west-northwest at 25 km/h. As of 5:30 AM IST today, it was located approximately 200 km east-northeast of Chennai, 210 km east-southeast of Nellore, 270 km south-southeast of Machilipatnam, 220 km east-southeast of Kavali, and 260 km southeast of Ongole.
The IMD anticipates that the cyclone will likely continue moving northwest and make landfall along the southern Andhra Pradesh coast as a Severe Cyclonic Storm, with wind speeds ranging from 100 to 110 km/h, gusting up to 120 km/h, between Nellore and Narsapur near Ongole late tonight into the early hours of November 3, 2026.
