Puri Police Detain 175 Snatchers and Recover 304 Phones During Rath Yatra 2026

Puri (Odisha) [India], August 5 (ANI): In a bid to safeguard the millions attending the renowned Rath Yatra 2026 of Lord Jagannath, Puri Police prioritized security and crime prevention through extensive measures.

Under the guidance of Superintendent of Police, Prateek Singh, and in collaboration with various police stations and the Cyber Police Station, an Anti-Snatching Team was established to thwart theft and snatching incidents during the festivities. The team conducted continuous monitoring in high-traffic areas such as the Grand Road (Bada Danda), around the Shree Jagannath Temple, bus terminals, beaches, and other sensitive spots, deploying undercover personnel as needed.

This strategic initiative led to the arrest of 175 individuals involved in snatching during the Rath Yatra. Appropriate legal cases were filed against all suspects, who were subsequently presented to the relevant courts as per legal protocols. This outcome highlights the Puri Police’s unwavering commitment to combating organized crime during significant public events.

Additionally, 304 lost mobile phones were retrieved during the operation, along with various valuable items, including gold jewelry, cash, wallets, identity documents, and other personal belongings. The police are in the process of returning these items to their owners after proper verification.

As part of their efforts, a “Missing Mobile Mela” was conducted today, where many recovered phones were returned to their owners. Citizens praised the swift action, transparency, and community-centric approach of the Puri Police in recovering and returning lost items.

The success of this operation was greatly aided by the effective application of technology, including CCTV surveillance, intelligence gathering, and the deployment of plain-clothes officers, alongside rapid response teams and smooth cooperation across police stations. These strategies enabled the authorities to quickly identify and apprehend suspects.

Puri Police encourages anyone whose mobile phone is lost and has not yet filed a complaint or retrieved their device to use the Puri Police “Sahayak” WhatsApp Chatbot at +91 87631 99400. This tool allows individuals to conveniently report lost phones and provide necessary details online from any location.

The accomplishments during Rath Yatra 2026 not only demonstrate the effective enforcement efforts of Puri Police against criminals but also reflect their dedication to a “Citizen First” philosophy. By returning lost items to their rightful owners, the police have further enhanced public trust and confidence.

Puri Police remains committed to ensuring public safety, crime prevention, and delivering prompt, transparent, and community-friendly policing services.
