The Oil and Natural Gas Corporation (ONGC) has discovered natural gas in a deepwater well located approximately 43 kilometers off the coast of Odisha, marking a significant addition to India’s energy resources.
This discovery was made at the MDW-28 well, which was drilled to a depth of about 1,450 meters.
According to ONGC, the well produced gas for three consecutive days at promising rates with sustained pressure, although the company has yet to reveal the exact flow rate or the estimated volume of gas present.
Understanding the Mahanadi Basin
The Mahanadi Basin is a vast sedimentary region situated along the eastern coast of India, stretching from the Mahanadi river delta into the Bay of Bengal.
Over millions of years, sediment deposits carried by rivers have formed geological structures capable of containing hydrocarbons like oil and natural gas.
A large portion of this basin is underwater, which poses technical challenges and high costs for exploration efforts. The recent discovery occurred in waters approximately 770 meters deep, with the MDW-28 well reaching a depth of around 1,450 meters.
This well is situated about 23 nautical miles from Konark and is the first of four planned wells in ONGC’s current exploration initiative in the basin.
Significance of the Discovery
India’s energy landscape is heavily reliant on imports, especially for natural gas. A commercially viable domestic gas find could enhance local supply and lessen the need for imported energy.
Natural gas serves various vital functions, including electricity generation, fertilizer production, city gas distribution, and a number of industrial applications. Thus, an increase in domestic output could have far-reaching effects beyond just the energy sector.
However, it is important to note that this discovery does not immediately lead to commercial gas production.
ONGC will need to undertake additional testing and appraisal drilling to assess the reservoir’s size, the amount of gas that can be extracted, and the economic feasibility of production.
This latest find builds upon ONGC’s previous exploration successes in the basin, including the Utkal and Konark gas discoveries made in 2024.
ONGC has expressed its commitment to continue exploring India’s deep and ultra-deepwater regions for hydrocarbons. Should further drilling verify substantial recoverable reserves, the Mahanadi Basin may play a significant role in India’s strategy to enhance domestic energy output and decrease its dependency on imports.
