A shocking incident of mob violence has emerged from Cuttack district in Odisha, where a 30-year-old man was allegedly dragged from his home, beaten to death, and subsequently burned in a forest due to suspicions of practicing black magic. The incident occurred on May 10 during the Chandan Yatra celebrations, and police have arrested 25 individuals following a complaint filed by the victim’s father.
The victim, identified as Tikam Behera, was believed by villagers to be involved in sorcery, which they blamed for various illnesses and problems affecting families in the community. Tikam had been residing with his brother and sister-in-law in Talamunduli village after his wife left him approximately seven years ago.
On the night of May 10, around 11 PM, a group of villagers allegedly forcibly removed Tikam from his home. According to police sources, the accused first convened a village meeting to discuss the allegations against him before launching their violent attack, which ultimately led to his death.
Following the murder, the perpetrators reportedly transported Tikam’s body into a nearby forest and set it ablaze to eliminate evidence. During the investigation, police recovered partially burnt remains and other evidence from the forest, marking a significant breakthrough in the case.
Cuttack (Rural) Superintendent of Police Vinit Agrawal confirmed the arrest of 25 suspects from the village as part of a comprehensive operation. Three police teams were formed under the leadership of Athagarh SDPO Biswajit Mohanty to delve into the case. One of the arrested individuals confessed during interrogation, providing crucial insights into the crime.
Authorities noted that several other suspects remain at large, and many villagers fled following the arrests, leaving parts of the village nearly deserted. A scientific investigation team has meticulously examined the crime scene, collecting physical samples and materials for forensic analysis.
On Tuesday morning, family members of the arrested suspects gathered at the Maniabandha police station seeking to meet their relatives, but were informed that the accused had been moved to Badamba, causing temporary tension in the area.
Despite ongoing awareness campaigns and stringent laws, incidents related to witchcraft and sorcery accusations continue to arise in various regions across India. The police stated that the investigation is ongoing, with efforts being made to apprehend the remaining individuals involved in this heinous act.
