The Odisha Government is ramping up efforts to tackle the issue of unsafe and crumbling buildings throughout the state by launching a 15-day investigation aimed at pinpointing structures that present risks to public safety.

Dr. Krushna Chandra Mahapatra, the Housing and Urban Development Minister, indicated that a review of government-owned buildings identified as unsafe has already taken place, leading to demolition notices where necessary. He noted that the initiative will also cover private properties, with owners of buildings deemed structurally unsound set to receive legal notices.

The Minister explained that the H&UD Department will directly handle unsafe structures, while those belonging to other government departments will be referred to the appropriate authorities. Urban Local Bodies in major cities like Cuttack and Puri have been instructed to perform thorough inspections of older and potentially hazardous buildings.

A specialized inquiry team has been established to carry out detailed assessments and is expected to submit its findings within the 15-day timeframe. Following the team’s report, any identified unsafe buildings will be scheduled for demolition to avert accidents and protect lives.

Dr. Mahapatra reinforced the Government’s commitment to citizen safety, stating, “No unsafe structure posing a threat to public life will be allowed to remain unattended.”
