Tanvi Patri, a 15-year-old badminton prodigy from India, etched her name in history at the 2026 Youth Olympic Games held in Dakar, Senegal, by winning a silver medal. This achievement makes her the first Indian woman to secure a badminton medal at the Youth Olympics.
In a thrilling women’s singles final, Tanvi faced the reigning World Junior Champion, Zhang Yi Xin from China, on Thursday. The match was fiercely contested, with Tanvi ultimately losing 15-21, 21-13, 26-24 after an intense 82-minute battle.
Her remarkable performance has placed her among a distinguished group of Indian badminton athletes who have stood on the Youth Olympic podium. Notable past medalists include H.S. Prannoy, who took silver in the first edition of the event in 2010, and Lakshya Sen, who was the runner-up in 2018.
Tanvi Patri’s Early Life and Journey into Badminton
Tanvi’s journey into badminton is unique compared to many of her peers. She first picked up a racket in China at the tender age of six while her father, Rabinarayan Patri, was working for an IT company in Shanghai.
Rabinarayan, who had enjoyed playing badminton casually during his college years, resumed playing upon relocating to China. Tanvi quickly followed in his footsteps, developing a passion for the sport.
Due to the scarcity of English-medium schools, Tanvi was primarily home-schooled by her mother, Sailabala Panda, who also has a background in the IT field. This allowed her to dedicate significant time to badminton.
Her early training was further enhanced by the mentorship of renowned coach Jiang Yong Yi, who has worked with several Olympic and World medalists.
Tanvi Patri’s Badminton Accomplishments
Tanvi has already carved out a name for herself as one of India’s most promising young badminton players. She currently holds the title of Asian U-17 champion and previously claimed the Asian U-15 championship in 2024.
Currently training at the Centre of Badminton Excellence in Bengaluru, Tanvi continues to refine her skills and grow as an athlete. Her recent silver medal in Dakar marks yet another significant achievement in her burgeoning career.
