Bhubaneswar: The government of Odisha has officially launched efforts to reestablish direct air service between Bhubaneswar and Dubai, inviting bids from airline operators to restart this crucial route.
As outlined in the tender documents, the airline must provide an aircraft capable of accommodating at least 180 passengers, and the operations will be supported by a state-sponsored subsidy. The chosen airline will be responsible for all aspects of operation, including regulatory compliance, commercial management, and safety protocols. The service is expected to operate a minimum of three flights weekly, adhering to the stringent guidelines set by the Directorate General of Civil Aviation (DGCA), Bureau of Civil Aviation Security (BCAS), Airports Authority of India (AAI), and other applicable regulations to ensure flights are safe, reliable, and focused on passenger needs.
The direct link from Bhubaneswar to Dubai was first established on May 15, 2023, with flights scheduled three times a week on Mondays, Wednesdays, and Fridays. However, the service was suspended in March 2026 due to increasing tensions in West Asia. IndiGo, the airline that operated this service, started cancelling specific flights as early as early March, including the Monday and Wednesday flights around March 2-3, owing to airspace restrictions and unrest associated with the regional conflict involving Iran, Israel, and the United States. These disruptions ultimately resulted in the complete suspension of the direct flights later that month.
Officials anticipate that reviving this route will enhance business relations, promote tourism, and facilitate travel for the Odia diaspora and other travelers.
