Hyderabad to Modernize Driving Tests with AI Technology

HYDERABAD: The driving licence examination process in Hyderabad is undergoing significant changes, as the Telangana Transport Department plans to implement Artificial Intelligence (AI)-driven video analytics at five Automated Driving Testing Tracks (ADTTs). This initiative aims to enhance the objectivity, standardization, and transparency of driving assessments.

The Hyderabad Metropolitan Development Authority (HMDA), representing the Transport Department, has called for bids to upgrade and construct ADTTs located in Nagole, Ibrahimpatnam, Kondapur, Uppal, and Medchal. The project is estimated to cost Rs 7.46 crore and is projected to be completed within a two-month timeframe.

These five facilities, situated throughout the Hyderabad Metropolitan Region and surrounding areas, are designed to bolster the infrastructure for driving licence testing and improve service delivery for applicants.

In the proposed system, AI-based video analytics will assess applicants’ driving skills against established standards. This automation is expected to minimize human involvement, ensure consistent evaluations, and enhance transparency in the licensing procedure.

Given the rapid increase in vehicle registrations and urban development, this initiative also aims to create a more systematic approach to driving skill assessments while addressing road safety issues. Officials from HMDA and the Transport Department previously inspected existing testing tracks to evaluate the current infrastructure and identify technological advancements needed for modernization.

This proposal is a result of a study conducted by a committee focused on automated driving test tracks. Committee members recently visited testing facilities in Delhi, Uttar Pradesh, and Odisha to analyze operational systems and their implementation. The insights gained are anticipated to inform the development of the proposed facilities in Hyderabad.
