Key Hearing Scheduled Today for Mahanadi Water Dispute Between Odisha and Chhattisgarh

The Mahanadi Water Disputes Tribunal is set to hold an important hearing today concerning the water conflict between Odisha and Chhattisgarh, signifying a pivotal moment in the efforts to find a resolution.

In New Delhi, the tribunal will examine the long-standing disagreements over the distribution of water from the Mahanadi River. As both states intensify their efforts to reach a consensus, all attention is directed towards the developments of today’s session.

The main focus of the hearing will be the report compiled by the Central Water Commission’s expanded technical committee. This committee had convened on the 13th of last month to facilitate discussions aimed at resolving key issues. The tribunal is expected to receive updates regarding the progress and any agreements achieved during this meeting.

Discrepancies exist between the two states, especially concerning the river’s flow in the non-monsoon season and the rights to utilize water from the Kalma Barrage.

For Odisha, maintaining a minimum river flow from November to May is crucial, while Chhattisgarh’s entitlement to withdraw water from the Kalma Barrage, which is situated upstream of the Hirakud Reservoir, constitutes another significant dispute.

In parallel, discussions are ongoing outside the tribunal to settle the matter amicably. A high-level meeting took place in New Delhi on October 1, led by Union Home Minister Amit Shah, with participation from Odisha Chief Minister Mohan Charan Majhi, Chhattisgarh Chief Minister Vishnu Deo Sai, and Union Minister for Jal Shakti C.R. Patil.

Both states tentatively agreed to pursue a resolution facilitated by the Central Water Commission. However, questions remain regarding the progress of these negotiations. How will Odisha’s demands for non-monsoon water flow be addressed? Can a consensus be achieved on the Kalma Barrage issue? The significance of today’s hearing cannot be overstated.

The Mahanadi River is essential for Odisha’s agricultural, industrial, and drinking water needs. The state has raised alarms over dwindling water levels, particularly during the summer months. Consequently, Odisha is highly attentive to today’s proceedings, eager to see what advancements are made towards a lasting resolution of the water dispute.
