In line with the international theme “Digital Agenda and Artificial Intelligence to Redesign Tourism,” the Department of Tourism for the Government of Odisha marked World Tourism Day 2026 on Sunday with a variety of groundbreaking initiatives.

The event took place at the State Convention Centre, Lok Seba Bhawan, focusing on advancements in digital technology, sustainable infrastructure, collaborative partnerships, and community-driven development.

Deputy Chief Minister Pravati Parida attended as the Chief Guest, with Chief Secretary Anu Garg serving as the Guest of Honour.

Strategic Partnerships and Financial Initiatives

To boost grassroots entrepreneurship and strengthen institutional ties, the Department of Tourism signed several important Memorandums of Understanding (MoUs):

• State Bank of India (SBI): This partnership aims to provide accessible financial support and loans to rural homestay owners.
• Archaeological Survey of India (ASI): This agreement seeks to enhance the institutional framework for preserving heritage tourism, highlighted by remarks from ASI Director General Shri Yadubir Singh Rawat on safeguarding India’s rich cultural assets.
• Indian Kayaking & Canoeing Association: This collaboration intends to broaden and formalize adventure tourism opportunities throughout Odisha’s waterways.

Moreover, provisional registration certificates (PRCs) were awarded to 17 beneficiaries under the state’s Homestay Scheme, enabling local families to engage directly in the tourism sector.

Improvements in Mobility and Eco-Tourism

The festivities included significant efforts to enhance visitor mobility and experiences. Parida inaugurated new OTDC luxury coaches aimed at improving transportation options for tourists.

In addition, a virtual flag-off ceremony showcased a new OTDC electric boat at Barkul and a catamaran introduced by Swosti in Chilika Lake, promoting eco-friendly travel in the area.

Workshops and Events at Khandagiri

The program featured training sessions for homestay operators alongside an Ethnic Tourism workshop. Tourism Commissioner-cum-Secretary Balwant Singh emphasized that these initiatives support inclusive and sustainable growth.

The celebration concluded with Deputy Chief Minister Pravati Parida launching a new Light & Sound Show at Khandagiri, which melds contemporary storytelling techniques with Odisha’s ancient heritage.
