A pilot from an Air India flight that experienced significant turbulence over Odisha on August 4 has reportedly tested positive for a psychoactive substance during a post-flight test, as per a report in The Times of India.

This incident follows a flight from Phuket to Delhi that suffered a sudden altitude drop, resulting in injuries to several passengers and crew members.

Pilot Allegedly Tests Positive Post-Flight

The Times of India, citing unnamed sources, revealed that one of the pilots from Air India flight AI2379, which is an Airbus A320, tested positive for a psychoactive substance in a screening performed after landing in Delhi.

While some reports have suggested that marijuana was the substance detected, there has been no official verification of the test results from Air India or the Directorate General of Civil Aviation (DGCA).

Air India confirmed awareness of the post-flight screening but noted that the results had not been communicated to the airline, hence they could not provide any comments on the findings. The airline reiterated its commitment to regular drug testing for crew members in compliance with civil aviation regulations.

Details of the Turbulent Flight

Flight AI2379, en route from Phuket to Delhi, encountered severe turbulence in the vicinity of Odisha on August 4, causing the aircraft to drop approximately 300 feet. This incident resulted in injuries to around 13 to 17 individuals, including four crew members. Fortunately, the aircraft landed safely in Delhi, and some of the injured were subsequently taken to hospitals for treatment.

Both Pilots Suspended from Duties

Pending the investigation’s outcome, both pilots have reportedly been suspended from their flying responsibilities. The DGCA is looking into various aspects of the incident, such as the crew’s response to the turbulence, the potential weather factors involved, and whether the aircraft sustained any damage.

The regulator is also assessing the decision to continue to Delhi instead of diverting to a nearer airport, with Varanasi and Lucknow mentioned as possible alternatives.

DGCA Regulations on Substance Testing

According to DGCA rules, a first-time positive test for psychoactive substances may lead to a referral for de-addiction and rehabilitation. The crew member can resume flying duties only after completing the necessary processes and receiving fitness clearance along with a negative test result.

Repeated positive tests might result in more severe consequences, including extended suspension or even revocation of the crew member’s license, depending on the circumstances and regulations.
The investigation is ongoing, and the reported positive test has yet to be officially confirmed by Air India or the DGCA.
