Bhubaneswar, Odisha, 28th July 2026: Vedanta Aluminium, the leading aluminium producer in India, has broadened its initiative aimed at assisting individuals with disabilities in the Jharsuguda and Sundargarh districts, emphasizing its dedication to inclusive community development. This program facilitated the distribution of wheelchairs and hearing aids to 49 beneficiaries, significantly improving their mobility and accessibility. The recent phase reached various localities including Jamkhani, Girisima, Jharpalam, R&R Colony Mendra, Garjanjore, Bileimunda, Chhatabar, and Ghogharpalli, where 19 wheelchairs were given to selected individuals. Previously, a similar effort was made in Kuraloi with the distribution of wheelchairs.
Focused on enhancing the accessibility for vulnerable groups, Vedanta Aluminium has made strides in supporting the needs of people with disabilities and the elderly, enabling them to engage more actively in daily life. The latest distribution phase of assistive devices saw participation from Sunanda Kalo, Sarpanch of Garjanjore Panchayat, alongside Accredited Social Health Activist (ASHA) workers, committee members, and community representatives, showcasing a strong partnership with local stakeholders to ensure effective reach and impact.
Amaresh Kumar, CEO of Vedanta Aluminium Coal Mines, commented on the initiative, stating, “At Vedanta Aluminium Coal Mines, we concentrate on meeting community needs through inclusive and actionable measures. Our goal is to enhance accessibility for individuals with disabilities and elderly members of the community, helping them lead more autonomous and satisfying lives. We are dedicated to collaborating with communities and stakeholders to foster significant and enduring social change.”
Damyanti Naik, an ASHA worker from Nuadihi in Garjanjore, expressed her gratitude, saying, “I am thankful to Vedanta Aluminium Coal Mines for providing this support to disabled individuals in our area. These assistive devices have simplified daily tasks, improved mobility, and allowed beneficiaries to access vital services with more confidence and independence.”
A resident of Girisima village, Keshav Purale, shared his experience, stating, “Receiving this wheelchair has greatly impacted my life. It has provided me with increased independence, allowing me to move around without constant assistance. I genuinely appreciate Vedanta Coal Mines for this considerate support, which has enhanced my mobility and brought renewed optimism to me and my family.”
In addition to this initiative, Vedanta Aluminium Coal Mines has improved healthcare access through its Mobile Health Unit (MHU) program, reaching over 50,000 residents, including more than 4,000 children, in 18 villages across Sundargarh and Jharsuguda districts. Over the last three years, the program has conducted more than 3,000 free health camps and over 1,000 health awareness sessions, providing consultations and essential healthcare services to local communities.
This initiative is part of Vedanta Aluminium’s larger community development strategy surrounding its coal mining activities, which have positively influenced more than 200,000 individuals across 26 villages. By focusing on healthcare, education, sustainable livelihoods, infrastructure, and social advancement, the company remains committed to collaborating with local communities to promote inclusive growth and improve quality of life throughout Odisha.
