Deputy Chief Minister Bhatti Vikramarka has called on Singareni Collieries to broaden its operations into critical minerals, renewable energy, and international mining initiatives to secure sustainable growth and enhance competitiveness.
During a high-level review meeting held at the Kothagudem headquarters of Singareni and Telangana GENCO, Bhatti affirmed that the State Government is committed to supporting the evolution of Singareni Collieries Company Limited (SCCL) into a globally competitive organization. He highlighted the importance of diversifying into emerging sectors as the energy landscape continues to shift.
Bhatti referred to Singareni as the “soul of Telangana,” praising its significant contributions to the state’s development over the past 130 years and assuring that the government would always be available to assist in its advancement.
He noted that the energy sector is poised for significant changes over the next 15 to 20 years, with an anticipated increase in solar, wind, and hydrogen energy, as well as battery storage and rare earth minerals, which will lessen reliance on thermal power and coal.
“Given these transformations, it is essential for Singareni to look beyond coal mining. The company must actively pursue diversification into forward-looking sectors to guarantee long-term viability,” he stated.
He recommended that the company venture into the mining of essential minerals like lithium and cobalt, crucial for advanced technologies such as semiconductor production and electric vehicle batteries. Additionally, he suggested that Singareni explore prospects in critical mineral auctions in countries like Australia and South Africa.
Bhatti asserted that Singareni’s extensive mining experience and skilled workforce position it well to manage high-standard international mining projects.
He pointed out that while Singareni once dominated coal production, the market has changed significantly due to the central government’s auctioning policy, which allows increased private sector involvement.
“In this competitive landscape, it is vital for Singareni to enhance quality, boost operational efficiency, minimize costs, and offer superior services compared to private competitors,” he advised.
The Deputy Chief Minister also emphasized the importance of strict quality control in coal production, instructing that operations must ensure coal is free from mud and stones. He called for improved quality monitoring, efficient operation of coal washeries, and scientific blending of different coal grades before delivery to consumers.
Criticizing the prior BRS Government, Bhatti claimed it lacked vision and failed to secure new coal resources through effective participation in coal block auctions. He also mentioned that it did not establish adequate plans for thermal power projects like Bhadradri and Yadadri or secure dedicated coal blocks for these initiatives.
Following the Congress Government’s assumption of power, he stated that key issues regarding land acquisition and forest clearances for the Naini coal block in Odisha and the Tadicherla-II project were prioritized and addressed.
Bhatti characterized Singareni as more than just a business, describing it as vital to the livelihoods of thousands of families. He underscored the need for ongoing profitability to ensure their future security.
He urged management and trade unions to engage in dialogue with employees across all mining locations, gather their input for the company’s long-term development, and create a detailed action plan that involves workers as essential stakeholders.
Finally, Bhatti instructed that future meetings of the Singareni Board should focus on expansion strategies and establish a comprehensive ten-year plan. He advocated for a corporate-style approach with clearly defined timelines, structured implementation strategies, and regular reviews to meet the company’s long-term goals.
